Dell has lunched a new tablet PC that provides some new capabilities.  The new benefits from the new device are around security, performance and battery life.  For security officer, the tablet has new safe guards that will it to better protect data or access capabilities that maybe stored on these devices.

For financial institutes, government entities, and healthcare organizations biometric capabilities and smart card readers that are made available in this new released tablet from DELL certainly seem to differentiate from its other competitor’s tablets.   While there are other methods available in other tablets to help secure them, the DELL tablet looks to have the two options integrated.  This will help its users and especially healthcare providers meet some of the requirements associated with two-authentication form factor. This is relevant since Meaningful use (EHR certification) and e prescribing of controlled substances requires this as part of the authentication process.

Another important aspect to note with the windows based tablet is its ability to offer changeable battery.  For many health providers, having to “plug” a tablet to charge can be disruptive and inconvenient, but with the ability to switch the battery when it has been used can mean longer usage period and more acceptance in the enterprise environment.  The tablet also comes with the capability for mobile broadband (HSPA+).

The enhanced security functionality is available in one of the four offerings that DELL has.  This tablet is likely to peak the interest of many healthcare IT executives recognizing the value added of the biometric and smart-card authentication as well as removable battery.
